Serigraph by H. Claude Pissarro

Les_rhododendrons_22x29_claude_pissHugues Claude Pissarro, father of lelia Pissaro, is the grandson of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and son of Paulemile Pissarro. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and enveloped in an artistic environment, he spent his childhood and youth with art. Carrying on a family tradition established by Camille Pissarro, his father frequently took Hugues on painting excursions, accompanied by his numerous artist friends, and these proved formative for him. Initially taught by his father, Hugues Pissarro first exhibited his work at the age of fourteen. He subsequently studied art in Paris at prestigious establishments such as Ecole du Musée du Louvre and, in particular, at Ecole Normale Supérieur, a unique French institution dedicated to the pursuit of achievement and excellence to which only the academic elite have access. It was inevitable that this educational background would lead him to become a professor of art for much of his professional life and in 1965 he accepted an official invitation to teach art in Monaco. He was even commissioned by the White House in 1959 to paint President Eisenhower. Below is a signed limited edition serigraph the Westport River Gallery has by Claude Pissarro/ Size of the image is 22x29. Click here for limited edition, signed and numbered serigraphs by his daughter, Lelia Pissarro.

Alex Perez: Impressionist Works

Alex_perez_impressionist_chioggia_2 Alex Perez’s art has been exhibited all over the world, and his works are included in private and public collections in Israel, the United States, Europe, South America and Japan. Perez’s work fuses a sophisticated color sensibility with a romantic realism approach, and he expresses his own passion and "joie de vivre" by recording Nature on the canvas. His color technique imbibes the shifting of light as day progresses from dawn to dusk and back again, the vividness of colors breathing life and vitality in to the canvas. Call the Westport River Gallery if you are interested in any of these pictures, which range from 8x10 to 20x24. 203-226-6934.

Impressionist CT Beach Scenes by Sage

Westport_family_brian_sage New impressionist summer beach scenes have are arrived in the Westport River Gallery. Artist Brian Sage is an impressionist with a soft, subtle approach to life. His new works are mostly 5x7, with the exception being the one at left which is an 8x10. His paintings are enjoyed for their depth and feelings they evoke, from the rainy day reflections of light in Boston, New York City and Hong Kong, to the gentle marine images from Florida, Rockport and other locations. Sage works hard to master the light, reflections and even flow of every picture he tackles. He's a perfectionist with an approach that might include hundreds of pictures before he approaches his canvas. His work is sparked by the images he sees, and even the impressions he gleans from what he feels.

This is a bronze limited edition sculpture entitled "Mother and Child." The composition and quality is wonderful. The size: Mother: 11" (Ht.) x 14 1/2" (Width) x 6 1/2" (Depth); Child: 4 1/2" (Ht.) x 7 3/4" (Width) x 4 1/4" (Depth). The sculptures can be put together or the Mother and Child can be separated. These arrive in the gallery early this week, with an introductory price for both at only $1250. This comes with a formal certificate of authenticity.

Sometimes an artist's heart is awakened at an early age. Such was the case with Donna Mason-Adams. Her muse first appeared in the form of a horse. An avid equestrian since the age of five, she was consumed with the effort of portraying the spirit of this magnificent animal.

Impressionist Art by Lelia Pissarro

Lelia_pissaro_summerLélia Pissarro has painted since the age of 4, having been educated by her grandfather Paulémile Pissarro and her father H. Claude Pissarro
From infancy until the age of eleven she was entrusted to the care of her grand-parents, Paulémile Pissarro and his wife Yvonne, in Clécy, Suisse Normandy, where her interest in drawing and painting was nurtured by her grandfather who taught her the fundamental impressionist and post-impressionist techniques. When she returned to her parents in Paris at the age of 11, the role of teacher was taken over by her father and she subsequently studied at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Lélia moved to London in 1988 and her work has regularly been exhibited in galleries around the world, and following the tradition of her great-grandfather (Camille Pissarro), grandfather and father, Lélia has played an important role in continuing this artistic dynasty by participating in a series of exhibitions entitled Pissarro – The Four Generations.

Vibrant Impressionist from Australia

HeadshotJilly Marie Dyson brings a lovely blend of subtle French Impressionism to all her works, reflecting her European travels and interests. Her works evokes memories of Monet, Van Gogh, Camille Pissarro and even Eugene Boudin.

Dyson grew up on a farm on New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, riding horses over grassy landscapes as a young girl. Her longing to capture such splendor on canvas began with these early experiences. Following that dream, she traveled to Florence and spent years in Italy. There her undying passion for impressionism was born. Capturing the glory of Tuscan villages and the character of derelicts on the streets of Florence marked the beginning of her lifelong journey as a painter.

Colorful Reflections of Tradition

G_hanLisa Hannick captures the simplicity of objects and casual gestures, and communicates them in a colorful, and highly visual method. Her work has an old masters quality, using what is called chiaroscuro lighting, and is highly influenced by the Dutch traditionalists. Since at least the Renaissance it has been customary for painters to do tonal studies while planning the composition of future major works. Chiaroscuro is arguably the most powerful technique at a painter's disposal for evoking mood within the composition.

By the mid 19th century different tonal schema had come to be associated with particular genres of paintings, or works by a given painter during phases of the life, such as Goya's black paintings, or Rembrant's golden landscape. Hannick’s insightful still life images and landscapes reflect a sense of order and balance, projecting a feeling of calm. Her life-like work is serene, capturing a traditional image at a particular time.

The British Countryside by Hawkins

Bb

As a child, Stephen combined an enthusiasm for horses with a love of drawing. He soon displayed a natural artistic ability which led him to produce equestrian and countryside paintings using a variety of medium. Since moving to Sussex 16 years ago, Stephen has concentrated on oil paintings, mainly of the South Downs. These capture the subtle changes of light and shade, throughout the seasons.
The inclusion of sheep and cattle in many of his landscapes helps to convey the peaceful atmosphere of Downland life. His paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Society of Equestrian Artists and at various exhibitions around England, and at the Westport River Gallery.

Naive Reverse Oil Paintings on Glass

Music_man
These works from Eastern Europe are oil paintings, painted in reverse on the back side of a pane of glass. Naïve art is characterized by a childlike simplicity. It is a gross oversimplification to assume that Naïve art is created by people with little or no formal art training. The term naïve art presumes the existence (by contrast) of an academy and of a generally accepted educated manner of art creation, most often painting. In practice, however, there are schools of naïve artists. Over time it has become an acceptable style, and in fact Grandma Moses is an example of this style. Naïve art describes the work of an artist who did not receive a formal education 'pseudo naïve' or 'faux naïve' art describes the work of an artist working in a more imitative or self-conscious mode and whose work can be seen as more imitative than original.

Wonderful Statements of Nature

Bb
Not all artists express themselves the way they see the world. Krupp is a favorite among designers, and those who like large colorful whisps of life, beauty and nature. She exhibits in museums, galleries and her artistic career dates back over three decades. She was featured at the Musee de Duncan, Paris and was awarded the Bronze Metal in the Salon D’Aout. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Massilion Art Museum in Ohio. During 2005 she exhibited at the Orange Center For Contemporary Art, Santa Anna, Calif. and “Exalted Color” Exhibition at the Caladan Gallery, Beverly Mass. “I am a master gardener. I have had garden clubs touring my garden. For years I photographed my gardens and painted from those photographs. I have also visited major public gardens in many states and painted the beauty that I found there. I have painted the displays at flower shops, and the beauty that I found in gardens and villages of Europe, the Caribbean, and America. In my current work I am creating abstract painting with a touch of nature. The driving force behind this work is the beauty of nature that I have sought to create and portray for many years. I love cooking, baking, and creating beauty and joy in all that I touch. After 30 years of art - ranging from images of seascapes and cottages, to gardens and flowers, to abstract paintings, I feel that I have always sought to portray the beauty that I find in the world. Several of her works are below, and range in size from 24x48 to 45x65.

Thomas McKnight Signed Serigraphs

Throughout the 1980s Thomas McKnight’s art became increasingly popular, and by the end of the decade he was at the top of his field: six books (including two in Japanese) had been devoted to his work,  and  hundreds  of silkscreen editions had been sold. His art was perhaps even more well-known in Japan, where he was commissioned to paint a series of views of Kobe for the city’s 1993 fair. In 1994 he was commissioned by the White House to paint the first of three images for President Clinton’s official Christmas card. In the middle of the nineties McKnight deepened his visions, and in the process began to paint larger and more built-up canvases. McKnight’s work is represented in the permanent collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as in the Smithsonian Institution. The Westport River Gallery has available several of his hand numbered, signed, limited edition serigraphs.

New Works by an Old Master

Wilkinson

Westport River Gallery in Westport, Connecticut is proud to represent the unique works of Henry Wilkinson. The gallery also represents British artists Stanley Andrews and Stephen Hawkins.

Wilkinson was born into an artistic family, his father having been taught to paint by John Ruskin, eventually became the Headmaster of Winchester College of Art. It was whilst living in Winchester that the young Wilkinson learned the first skills of Gun Making, climbing out of the scullery window in the evenings to work, unknown to his farther, at the famous gunmakers 'Hamond of Winchester'. It was at Hammonds that he first became fascinated by engraving,  learning from the craftsmen who decorated the metalwork on the hand-made firearms. Today Henry Wilkinson is one of the last remaining qualified Muzzle Loading' gun maker in the country. Following his early studies at Winchester College of Art, entrance was gained to the Royal College of Art in the Painting School. By hard work a place was also gained in the Engraving School, under Robert Austin R.A. and Malcolm Osbourne MA. MBE, where he won the Royal British Institute Scholarship in Engraving. This gave him extra time at the college and enabled him to gain a traveling scholarship, as well as the diplomas. Study in Heidelberg, France and Italy followed. After the war he was elected to the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers & Engravers, ultimately as a counselor. For many years he was professor of the Engraving School at the City and Guilds of London, a consultant to the Morris Singer Bronze Founders and a council member of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers. While a student at the Royal College of Art Wilkinson was introduced to George Vernon Stokes the famous canine artist and engraver, Wilkinson then helped Stokes print his editions until his death in 1954. It was only then that Wilkinson began to produce his original drypoints of Dogs and other Sporting Subjects.

Today now well into his 80s and seen in photo below, Wilkinson works alone in his studio - workshop in rural Kent, still producing his limited editions entirely single-handed. From origination, to hand engraving his metal plates and eventually printing and finishing the editions, the work is entirely his own. He even produces his own printing inks. His genuine deep love and understanding for country life, rural pursuits and well bred dogs, built up over a lifetime, are clearly evident, not only in his 'Dry Points' and 'Line Engraving' Signed Limited Editions, but also in his original paintings which amazingly, he still finds time to paint.

Each of the following four images is a limited edition original etching, which is currently being framed and will be back in the gallery by week's end. Each is about 10x14 (about 14x18 framed) and very reasonably priced at $285 plus tax. The photo at far right below is an original oil painting by the British master. The picture is 16x24 and sells for $4250, unframed. Call us at 203-226-6934 if you are interested. Other gallery works can be seen at the Westport River Gallery.
